Virginia Hospital Settles Child’s Medical Malpractice Claim for $1.8 million

Carillon Clinic in Roanoke, Virginia settled a medical malpractice claim with parents of a young child who suffered a brain injury during surgery.  The child, Michelle Zhang, was hospitalized at Carillon Roanoke Memorial Hospital in September 2012 for pneumonia and other respiratory conditions.  Michelle was just 21 months old at the time.  A lawsuit filed on her behalf alleged that the anesthesiologist should have terminated the single lung ventilation procedure when the toddler’s oxygen levels began to rapidly drop.  This lead to a cardiac arrest that in turn caused brain injury.

Man paralyzed by medical malpractice wins $9.1 million jury award

Minnesota resident and former auto mechanic Joe Lakoskey won $9.1 million in a medical malpractice lawsuit arising out of a 2012 surgery for a perforated bowel.  Lakoskey’s attorney proved that the anesthesiologist was negligent for putting him under in preparation for surgery when he was severely dehydrated.  In fact, the anesthesiologist actually halted the treatment for dehydration that was already underway.  This resulted in a drop in blood pressure and insufficient blood flow to Lakoskey’s spinal cord.

Lakoskey was unable to continue running his mechanic shop due to permanent loss of use of his legs.  The verdict is the third largest recorded medical malpractice award in the state.
