Minnesota resident and former auto mechanic Joe Lakoskey won $9.1 million in a medical malpractice lawsuit arising out of a 2012 surgery for a perforated bowel. Lakoskey’s attorney proved that the anesthesiologist was negligent for putting him under in preparation for surgery when he was severely dehydrated. In fact, the anesthesiologist actually halted the treatment for dehydration that was already underway. This resulted in a drop in blood pressure and insufficient blood flow to Lakoskey’s spinal cord.
Lakoskey was unable to continue running his mechanic shop due to permanent loss of use of his legs. The verdict is the third largest recorded medical malpractice award in the state.
